Are Hyacinths Annuals Or Perennials?

These Exquisite Spring Flower Bulbs Are Valued For Their Heady Scent And Ravishing Color - But Are Hyacinths Perennials Or Annuals?

DutchGrown hyacinths are one of the most popular fall-planted flower bulbs and
have been developed over centuries from wild plants that grow high in the
mountainous regions of Turkey, where summers are baking hot and dry and winters
are cold and snowy. But with our modern varieties, are hyacinths perennials? Or
should we think of them as annuals?

Are Hyacinths Perennials In The Garden?

The good news is that if you look after them properly, hyacinths will come back
again and bloom the following year. The secret is to plant them in a location with
maximum sunshine and keep them dry over the summer. Too much water makes
the bulbs rot so an ideal location would be on the sunny side of a shrub or hedge,
where the roots absorb any excess moisture in the ground.

Are Hyacinths Perennials When Grown In Pots?

Hyacinths make a lovely subject for growing in a pot where you can enjoy their
fresh, sweet fragrance up close. Hyacinth bulbs planted in a pot are subject to more stress than in the garden so it’s unlikely they will bloom again. However, after the blooms have faded, you can replant them in the garden and they should bloom
again next spring. So when we're asked "are hyacinths perennials?", the answer is
yes!

Are Hyacinths Annuals or Perennials?

If you live in a warm climate zone, you need to dig up hyacinth bulbs after
blooming and refrigerate them for 6 - 8 weeks before planting again in fall to get
them to bloom. Many gardeners in these areas prefer to treat hyacinths as annuals,
discarding the bulbs after blooming and choosing fresh ones to plant in fall.

Whether you’re going to treat your hyacinths as perennials or annuals, explore the
exquisite varieties range in our hyacinth collection: choose from unique single varieties or opt for one of our bulb combinations for a stunning display.
