Growing Guide: How to Grow Eryngium

Eryngium is an ornamental perennial plant with silvery leaves. Its egg shaped flowers boast blue spikes and bright green centres. Its egg shaped flowers boast blue spikes and bright green centres. It attracts pollinators, butterflies, and bees because of its unique flowers. The blue-grey foliage provides a nice contrast to other plants in your landscape design. They are a great choice for borders and rock gardens.

Eryngium prefers to grow in well-drained soil and full sun but can tolerate part shade conditions as well if that's what you have available to plant it in. It’s crucial that the soil has really good drainage so that the plant does not die of root rot. This plant can grow up to 3 feet tall and up to 2 feet wide, so keep this in mind when planting and give them plenty of space with room to grow. It grows best when planted at least 18 inches apart from each other so they can spread out their roots fully without competing with each other for nutrients or space in your garden bed or container planters.

Quick Guide:

  1. Prepare well draining soil, preferably dry.
  2. Dig holes at least 18 inches apart.
  3. Water moderately(?), especially after they’re established.
  4. Deadhead to promote additional blooms.

These plants may not be easy to find, but if you’re lucky enough to have one in your garden or home, you can use these basic steps to grow them with a better understanding of what they need to thrive.
