Fritillaria Persica Purple Dynamite pushes up thick blue-green stems lined with twisting, sea-glass leaves, then opens row after row of small bell-shaped flowers in a shiny grape purple that turns almost black as the season runs on. Each spike carries between 20 and 30 nodding bells, all hanging the same direction like little dinner bells waiting for the wind. This one is the souped-up cousin of the older Persian Lily. Fatter bulbs, taller stems, and a glossier, darker flower than the standard form. The shine is what gets people. In a photo it doesn't really come through. In person the petals look like they've been waxed by hand. You'll get stems hitting 32 to 38 inches in decent soil, sometimes a touch more by year three. Bloom starts in mid-spring, usually April in the South and early May further north. The flowers open from the bottom of the spike upward, so a single stem stays in show for two to three weeks. The whole plant goes dormant by midsummer, which leaves room for daylilies, salvia, or a few annuals to fill in the gap.

A few things to know before you plant:
Pick a sunny spot. Fritillaria Persica Purple Dynamite wants six hours of direct sun, more if you can give it. Light shade in the afternoon is fine. Drainage matters more than richness. Wet feet in July will rot them faster than anything else, so if your soil holds water, mix in some grit or coarse sand. A gentle slope works wonders. So does a raised bed. Plant in fall, 6 to 7 inches deep, 8 to 10 inches apart, pointy side up. Some growers tilt the bulb on its side to keep water from collecting in the dished top, that's an old trick worth using. Water once after planting, then leave them alone until you see leaves push through the ground. Skip the deer fence on this one. Every part of the plant carries a faint skunky scent that deer, voles, mice, moles, and rabbits walk right past. You won't notice the smell at nose height. The wildlife does, and they keep their distance. Hardy from zone 4 through zone 8. Folks gardening in zone 9 can grow them too, though warm winters may shorten the show after a few years.

How they look in the garden:
Purple Dynamite earns its keep in the back half of a sunny border. Plant them behind a band of late tulips, alliums, or columbine and let the dark bells rise out of the lower flowers like exclamation points. They also pair well with chartreuse foliage, think Lady's Mantle, hosta 'Sum and Substance', or a young gold elderberry. The contrast makes the purple read almost black. Cut a single stem and it'll hold up for a week in a tall vase. Most gardeners can't bring themselves to snip any, which is fair. They look better in the ground.

Bulb size and what to expect the first year:
We ship large, plump bulbs, 20/+ and the size matters with Fritillaria. Small bulbs sit out a year before they flower. The grade we sell will bloom the first spring after planting with one strong stem per bulb. By year two or three, an established clump throws multiple stems and the show settles into the kind of thing you start planning the whole spring garden around.

Quick facts:
Botanical name: Fritillaria persica 'Purple Dynamite'
Common name: Persian Lily, Persian
Fritillary Height: 30 to 36 inches
Spread: 8 to 10 inches
Bloom time: April to May
Flower color: Shiny grape purple, aging to deep plum-black
Light: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, gritty, neutral to alkaline
Planting depth: 6 to 7 inches
Spacing: 8 to 10 inches
USDA zones: 4 to 8
Deer, rodent, and rabbit resistant
Pollinator friendly (early bees love the bells)

A bit of background:
Fritillaria persica has been grown in European gardens since the late 1500s, when Ottoman gardeners passed bulbs along to Vienna. Purple Dynamite is a modern Dutch selection of that old species, a hand-picked seedling chosen for its taller stem, fuller flower count, and that wet-paint shine on the petals. This is a Crown Imperial, one of the oldest and most dramatic flowering bulbs in cultivation. A single stem shoots straight up to around three feet, ringed with glossy lance-shaped leaves in the lower half, then bare in the upper half, before ending in something that looks like it was designed for a botanical illustration: a ring of pendant, bell-shaped flowers in deep scarlet red, topped by a tuft of green foliage like a pineapple's crown. Each nodding bell hangs downward, and inside each one sits a glistening drop of nectar, something Persian folklore called the flower's tears, a reference to ancient legends that have followed this plant for centuries. What makes 'Red Beauty' stand apart from other Crown Imperials is the color. Most red-labeled fritillarias lean orange. This one is genuinely, deeply red, scarlet bells on dark, near-black stems with foliage that carries a red tinge too. The whole plant has a richness and intensity that looks almost unreal in early spring, when most of the garden is still soft and pastel. It's been in cultivation since the 16th century, when the Flemish botanist Carolus Clusius first planted Crown Imperials in his botanical gardens at Leiden. From there they spread through European gardens and eventually appeared in Dutch Golden Age paintings, where they were a symbol of wealth and imperial power. Four centuries later, the plant still carries that same presence. A Few Things Worth Knowing The bulbs have a distinctive musky smell, strong enough to deter deer, moles, voles, and squirrels. This is one of the genuine advantages of growing fritillaria: once it's in the ground, wildlife tends to give the whole area a wide berth. The flowers are also pollinator-friendly, producing generous amounts of nectar that bees and hummingbirds seek out early in the season when not much else is in bloom. One planting tip that matters: plant the bulbs on their sides. The large, fleshy bulbs have a hollow center cavity where the previous year's stem emerged, and if planted upright, water can collect there and cause rot. Tipping them at an angle solves the problem entirely. After blooming, the foliage dies back relatively quickly. It's worth planting 'Red Beauty' alongside later-emerging perennials or ornamental grasses that can fill in once the fritillaria goes dormant for summer.

What You're Getting
Fritillaria imperialis 'Red Beauty' bulbs, ready to plant in fall for mid-spring blooms.

Quick Facts
Botanical name: Fritillaria imperialis 'Red Beauty'
Common name: Crown Imperial
Color: Deep scarlet red with dark stems and red-tinged foliage
Bloom time: Early-Mid spring
Height: 30-36 inches
Hardiness: USDA Zones 5-8
Sun: Full sun to partial shade
Deer, mole & rodent resistant: Yes
Pollinator friendly: Yes

Planting Tips
Plant in fall in well-drained, fertile soil. This variety blooms two to three weeks ahead of standard fritillarias, which makes it one of the first tall, dramatic plants to appear in the spring garden. When everything else is still waking up, Early Fantasy is already three feet tall and putting on a show. The stems are dark, the bells hang in a full, generous ring, and the whole plant is topped with that unmistakable pineapple-like crown of bright green bracts that makes Crown Imperials look like nothing else in cultivation. It's also fuller and more floriferous than the classic varieties, more bells per stem, more presence per plant. Plant it at the back of a perennial border where the height makes sense, or use it to line a path or flank an entry where people will actually walk past it and get a close look at those veined petals. It pairs naturally with apricot or white tulips, soft yellow daffodils, and purple alliums, a combination that feels warm and considered rather than thrown together. Deer leave it alone. So do rabbits, squirrels, and moles. The bulbs carry a distinctive musky scent that wildlife finds deeply unappealing, which is one of the quiet advantages of growing fritillaria in a garden that gets pressure from critters. Bees, on the other hand, are very much in favor of it, Early Fantasy produces generous nectar early in the season when not much else is available. Once it's in the ground and settled, this is a plant that asks very little. It comes back reliably each year, slowly building into a more impressive clump. After the flowers fade, the foliage retreats fairly quickly, so it's worth having later-emerging perennials nearby to fill the space it leaves. Let the leaves die back on their own before cutting, they're feeding next year's bulbs. One planting rule that really does matter: put the bulbs in on their sides. The large, fleshy bulbs have a hollow cavity at the top where the previous year's stem grew, and if planted upright, water collects there and rots the bulb from the inside. Tipped at an angle, the problem doesn't exist. Plant about 6 inches deep in well-drained soil, give them full sun, feed when the shoots emerge in spring, and let them do the rest.

Quick Facts
Botanical name: Fritillaria imperialis 'Early Fantasy'
Common name: Crown Imperial
Color: Soft apricot / peach-pink with red veining on outer petals
Bloom time: Early to mid-spring (March–April)
Height: 36 inches
Hardiness: USDA Zones 4-8
Sun: Full sun
Deer & rodent resistant: Yes
Pollinator friendly: Yes
Key planting tip: Always plant bulbs on their sides

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1902/7917/collections/Fritillaria-imp.-Lutea-Yellow-2017.jpg?v=1679859311
