Description
Daffodil Cosmopolitan brings a very soft, modern look to spring. Each stem carries several flowers, with clean white petals around a long cup that shades from cream and light yellow to a peachy pink rim. As the flowers mature the colors soften even more, so a planting of Cosmopolitan always looks fresh and light rather than harsh. Cosmopolitan is a jonquil type daffodil with three or four blooms on a single stem, a light citrus fragrance, and a height of about twelve to sixteen inches. It flowers in mid spring, just as early tulips and small bulbs are finishing and the garden is starting to fill out. The small cluster of flowers on each stem makes it very good for cutting; a handful of stems is enough for a full vase. For gardeners in the United States this variety is easy to grow and very reliable. It is classed as a Division 7 jonquilla daffodil and is hardy in roughly zones four to nine, so it performs well in much of the country from the Northeast and upper Midwest through the Pacific Northwest and many parts of the South. Plant it in full sun or light shade, in soil that drains well, and it will settle in and return for many years, especially if you allow the leaves to ripen naturally after bloom. Cosmopolitan is perfect along a path, mixed into perennial borders, or planted in generous clumps near patios and seating areas where the sweet scent can be enjoyed up close. It also works beautifully in containers, where the creamy white petals and pink cups pair easily with soft tulips, muscari, or spring perennials. Once planted in fall at about six inches deep in cool soil, the bulbs need very little care beyond good drainage and a brief watering after planting, which makes them an easy long term addition to any spring display.
