Keep Losing Your Blooms to Hungry Deer? Choose Deer Resistant Bulbs for a Colorful Spring Garden

If you live in a location that is also home to deer, it can be something of a challenge to create a colorful spring garden. While fencing can help to prevent Bambi and his pals from dining on your plants, the most important step you can take is to choose deer resistant bulbs. Luckily, many of the most beautiful flower bulbs are naturally unpalatable to deer; plant them in fall and enjoy a stunning display next spring.

Deer Resistant Bulbs: Daffodils

Daffodils contain an alkaloid that makes them very unappetizing to deer. With a vast range of sizes, shapes, blooming times and colors to choose from, there’s a daffodil for every location. Daffodils look fabulous in beds, borders, and containers, either on their own or combined with other plants. They also naturalize well in grass or under trees and will come back year after year.

Deer Resistant Bulbs: Tulips

While tulips are known to be a favorite snack of deer, there are many varieties of tulips that are deer resistant. The miniature tulip Lilac Wonder and the elegant Lady Tulip or Tulip Clusiana are perfect for bringing color to pots, beds, and borders while the golden yellow Tulip Sylvestris will naturalize when planted in wilder areas of the garden.

Deer Resistant Bulbs: Alliums and Spanish Bluebells

For deer resistant color in mid to late spring, alliums offer the perfect solution. This diverse group of spring flower bulbs comes in a dizzying array of forms, from the graceful Summer Bells to the magnificent Allium Schubertii. Spanish bluebells in shades of blue, pink and white are ideal for woodland gardens and shady areas. While deer may not enjoy Spanish Bluebells, pollinating insects love their fragrant bell-shaped flowers.

We hope we’ve inspired you to include some beautiful flower bulbs in your spring garden. Head over to our deer resistant bulb collection to discover an extensive range of bulbs that deer don’t enjoy.
