Learn How to Plant Flower Bulbs for a Stunning Display in Spring

Planting flower bulbs is a quick and easy way to bring cheerful color to your spring garden. By choosing different varieties such as snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils, hyacinth, and tulips, you can enjoy ravishing color in your garden from February thru May.

How to Plant Bulbs: Planning Ahead

If you're wondering when to plant bulbs, the answer is almost always “in fall”, from September through December, depending on your location. Spring flowering bulbs need a period of cold to bloom well and should be planted a few weeks before the first frosts; this gives time for their roots to start growing before winter sets in. In warm climates, they need to be chilled for 8-10 weeks in a refrigerator before planting.

How to Plant Bulbs for the Best Results

We’re often asked how deep do you plant bulbs for the best results. It depends on the variety: as a rule of thumb, larger bulbs such as daffodils and tulips should be planted about 8” deep and smaller ones such as Dutch iris and anemones about 4” deep. Dig a hole ( or a trench if you’re planting a larger number of bulbs) and plant the bulb with the pointed end upwards before backfilling and watering well.

How to Plant Bulbs in Pots

When planning a spring display of bulbs in pots, you can plant them much more closely than you would in the ground. Just make sure that they are not touching or they may rot. You can achieve lovely effects by combining different colors or plant different varieties in layers to extend the blooming season - plant the latest to bloom on the lowest level then add earlier varieties on top.

Now you’ve learned how to plant bulbs, you can get creative designing your spring garden. For more ideas, visit our flower bulb collection and discover an array of varieties to suit every location.
