Tulip growers label their bulbs according to the times that they bloom. The earliest varieties are the miniature tulips whose blooms appear in the garden as early as March; they can also be grown in pots indoors. Mid-season varieties such as the tall Darwin hybrids and Triumph tulips bloom in April, closely followed by late-blooming varieties such as lily flowered tulips and the flamboyant parrot tulips that bloom in late April to May.

Dutch bulb farmers are renowned as the world’s tulip experts and the tulip fields in the Netherlands are an unforgettable sight in spring, with millions of blooms growing in every shade imaginable. Dutch tulips begin blooming in March with the early varieties and continue through late May but the tulip season hits its truly dazzling peak in mid to late April.


When Do Tulips Bloom In California?

Tulips originate in regions with a cold climate and they require a period of chilling in winter if they are to bloom well. But don’t worry, you can create a beautiful tulip garden even in warm zones such as Southern California. Place your tulip bulbs in the salad crisper of the refrigerator for at least 8 weeks before planting them in late November or December and they will reward you with a colorful display next spring.
