When to Plant Tulips and Daffodils for Vibrant Color in Spring

Fall planted flower bulbs such as tulips and daffodils are easy to grow. They’re loved by novice gardeners and expert horticulturalists alike for their vibrant colors and elegant shapes. Read our guide to learn when to plant tulips and daffodils for a successful display next spring.

When to Plant Tulips and Daffodils in Cool Zones

Tulips and daffodils need a period of cold temperatures in order to bloom. The bulbs should be planted in the fall around 6 - 8 weeks before the first frosts so that the roots can become established before the ground freezes. This can be any time from September through November, depending on your location. It’s best to plant your bulbs as soon as possible after they arrive. If conditions don’t allow you to plant them at once, store them in a dark, dry place until the weather improves.

When to Plant Tulips and Daffodils in Warmer Locations

In warmer areas, (climate zones 9 - 11), you’ll need to pre-chill tulips and daffodil bulbs for a period of 8 - 10 weeks before planting from September through November. Place the bulbs in a paper sack and store in a refrigerator away from any fruits, as they produce ethylene, a gas that could damage the next season’s blooms inside the bulbs.

When to Plant Tulips and Daffodils Indoors

Tulips and daffodils make great subjects for planting in pots indoors. The same guidelines apply as when planting tulips and daffodils in warmer areas: pre-chill the bulbs and plant in the fall, in a pot with drainage holes. Keep in a cool, dark spot until the shoots appear, then move to a bright warm room where they will bloom.

Now that you’ve learned when to plant daffodils and tulips, all you have to do is to choose your favorite varieties. If you have any other questions about growing flower bulbs, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
