Description
Tulip Ice Cream is one of the most recognizable and talked about tulips in the world, and it earns that reputation the moment it opens. The flower forms a dense, peony style head with a creamy white center that rises above a collar of rosy pink petals. As it matures, the white top expands and really does resemble a scoop of ice cream sitting in its cup. No two blooms open exactly the same, which adds to the charm. This is a late spring, double tulip that makes a strong visual statement in the garden. The stems are sturdy but shorter than many classic tulips, so it looks best planted in groups where the blooms can support each other. In borders, raised beds, and containers, Ice Cream stands out immediately and often becomes the flower visitors ask about first. Gardeners love Tulip Ice Cream for its novelty and impact. It is not a subtle tulip and it is not meant to blend in. Instead, it works best as a focal point, paired with solid colored tulips or planted on its own so the unusual shape can really be appreciated. It also performs well as a cut flower, especially once the bloom has fully developed and shows its signature white center. Plant Tulip Ice Cream bulbs in fall in a sunny to lightly shaded spot with well drained soil. Like most double tulips, it benefits from some shelter from strong wind and heavy rain. Given the right conditions, it delivers one of the most memorable tulip displays you can grow in a spring garden.
