All About Ranunculus Butterfly™ Series - How To Grow These Beauties Successfully

Learn how to grow Ranunculus Butterfly™ series for stunning spring blooms. Discover the best planting time, soil tips, care advice, and whether they can stay in the ground over winter. Perfect for gardens and cut flower lovers.

When to Plant Butterfly Ranunculus

Zones 8–10 (e.g., California, Texas, South Carolina): Plant in fall (October–November) for spring blooms. They’ll root over winter and flower in early to mid spring.

Zones 6–7 (e.g., Midwest, Mid-Atlantic): Plant in late winter or early spring (February–March) after last hard frost, unless you start them indoors or in a tunnel.

Zone 5 and colder: Start indoors in late winter and plant out after frost, or grow in pots you can protect.

How to Plant

Soak claws in water for 3-4 hours before planting to rehydrate them (don’t soak overnight).
Plant 1.5-2 inches deep, claws facing down, about 6-8 inches apart.
Use well-draining soil, ranunculus hate sitting in wet conditions. Raised beds, amended beds, or large pots work well.
Full sun is ideal, especially in spring.

Watering

Water lightly after planting, then increase as growth appears. Keep soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Overwatering early is a common cause of rot.

Flowering & Yield

Blooms arrive 90-120 days after planting. Each claw can yield 15-20+ stems, and Butterfly™ types produce multi-flowered, airy stems that are great for bouquets. Cut frequently to encourage more bloom flushes.

Overwintering Zones 8–10:
You can leave them in the ground, just mulch lightly for frost protection.

Zone 7 and below: It’s safest to lift and store the tubers after foliage dies back. Dry and store in a cool, dark place.

Will They Come Back? Yes, in mild climates they can act as short-lived perennials, especially if the soil is well-drained. Most gardeners report strong flowering for 2–3 years, then gradual decline unless divided or replaced.
