Description

If you love unusual spring bulbs, Mini Daffodil ‘Polar Hunter’ is one that immediately stands out. This relatively new introduction is unlike the classic bright yellow daffodils most gardeners know. Instead, it opens in soft shades of green that slowly fade into creamy white, creating a fresh, elegant look that feels almost magical in the early spring garden. Originally bred in New Zealand by hybridizer John A. Hunter and introduced in 2020, this remarkable daffodil traces part of its heritage back to the rare green-flowering species Narcissus viridiflorus. That ancestry is what gives Polar Hunter its unusual green glow and refined color shifts as the blooms mature.

A daffodil that changes color as it blooms
The buds begin in a striking olive or chartreuse green. As the flowers open, the petals soften to pale greenish white while the small cup retains a subtle yellow green tint. Over time the bloom becomes almost ivory white, still holding a delicate hint of green that makes it look luminous in the garden. Each stem produces up to four flowers, giving the plant a graceful, airy appearance rather than the single bold bloom of traditional trumpet daffodils. These flowers are also wonderfully fragrant, filling the garden with a sweet scent reminiscent of jasmine and honey on warm spring days.

Perfect for natural looking spring gardens
Mini Daffodil Polar Hunter grows about 12-14 inches tall, making it ideal for the front of borders, rock gardens, woodland plantings, or containers. Its compact size also makes it perfect for planting along pathways or near patios where its fragrance can be appreciated up close. Because several flowers appear on each stem, even a small group creates a surprisingly full display. Plant them in drifts and they will naturalize easily, returning year after year with very little care. Like most daffodils, they are deer resistant and thrive in USDA zones 3-9.

A rare look among daffodils
Most daffodils shout bright yellow. Polar Hunter does something completely different. Its cool green tones, subtle ivory petals, and delicate fragrance give it an almost woodland elegance. It pairs beautifully with snowdrops, crocus, muscari, and other early bulbs for a layered spring display.
