Description

Dahlia ‘Black Narcissus’ is one of the darkest and most dramatic dahlias you can grow, and it looks almost unreal when it comes into bloom. The petals are long, narrow, and sharply pointed, twisting slightly to create that classic cactus shape. The color is a deep, velvety red so dark it reads almost black, especially toward the center of the flower. As the light hits it, you start to see rich wine and burgundy tones come through, but it always keeps that moody, near-black presence. This is not a background plant. It draws the eye immediately. The blooms are typically around six to eight inches across, larger and fuller than many other cactus types, with a strong, spiky structure that gives them real impact in the garden. Plants grow to about 36 to 48 inches tall, producing long, sturdy stems that hold the flowers well above the foliage. Like most dahlias, it flowers continuously from midsummer until the first frost if you keep cutting or removing spent blooms.
In the garden, Dahlia ‘Black Narcissus’ works best when you give it contrast. It looks striking against lighter flowers like blush pinks, creams, and whites, where the dark color really stands out. It also fits perfectly into deeper, more dramatic plantings with burgundy foliage, dark reds, and purples. The shape helps break up softer, rounder blooms and adds structure to mixed borders.
For cutting, this is a standout variety. The long stems and bold form make it a strong focal flower in arrangements. It’s often used to add depth and contrast rather than to blend in, and a few stems can completely change the look of a bouquet.  Plant tubers in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil and allow enough space for the plant to develop. Because of its height and large blooms, staking early is recommended to keep stems upright through the season. In colder regions of the United States, lift the tubers after the first frost and store them dry over winter.
If you want a dahlia that adds depth, structure, and a darker edge to your garden, Dahlia ‘Black Narcissus’ is one of the strongest choices you can make.

          Planting information

          - Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.

          - Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.

          - Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.

          - Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
