Description
Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’ has a darker, more refined look than most red dahlias. It doesn’t rely on size or brightness to stand out. Instead, it’s all about tone and shape. The petals are long, narrow, and slightly curved, forming that classic cactus dahlia silhouette. The color sits deep in the spectrum, a rich burgundy with a velvety finish that can appear almost black in lower light. When the sun hits it, subtle red tones come forward, but it always keeps that dark, moody character. It’s a quieter kind of drama. The flowers are usually around four to six inches across, with a more open, spiky structure that gives them a lighter feel despite the dark color. Plants grow to about 36 to 40 inches tall and produce long, slender stems that carry the blooms well above the foliage. Like most dahlias, it flowers continuously from midsummer until the first frost when regularly cut.
In the garden, Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’ works best when you let the color do the work. It pairs naturally with lighter tones like blush pinks, creams, and soft whites, where the contrast becomes more noticeable. It also fits well into darker, more layered plantings with burgundy foliage and deep red companions. The shape adds texture and helps break up fuller, rounder blooms.
For cutting, this is a very useful variety. The stems are long and clean, and the flower form brings structure into arrangements. It’s often used to add depth and contrast rather than to fill space, and even a few stems can shift the entire look of a bouquet.
Plant tubers in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil and allow enough space for the plant to develop. Staking early is recommended to keep stems upright as the plant grows. In colder parts of the United States, tubers should be lifted after frost and stored dry over winter.
If you’re looking for a dahlia that leans darker without feeling heavy, Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’ brings depth, structure, and a more understated presence to the garden.
