Description
Massive is the only way to describe Dahlia ‘Great Hercules’. The blooms can easily reach 10 inches across, sometimes even more under good growing conditions. When this plant is in full flower, it does not blend in. It takes over the space in the best possible way. The flowers are fully double with broad, slightly curved petals that create a full, rounded form. The color leans into warm peach/apricot with soft buttery tones, sometimes picking up a faint creamy highlight toward the outer petals as the bloom matures. In sunlight, the whole flower seems to glow. Despite the size, the plant carries these blooms well on strong, upright stems, typically growing to around 40 to 48 inches tall. Still, with flowers this large, staking early is not optional. It is essential if you want clean, upright stems through the season. In the garden, Dahlia ‘Great Hercules’ is a focal point plant. It works best placed toward the back of a border or given space where the scale of the blooms can really be appreciated. It pairs beautifully with darker dahlias, deep greens, and even soft whites, where the golden color stands out even more.
For cutting, this is a statement flower. One bloom can anchor an entire arrangement, and the warm yellow tone makes it easy to mix with both soft and bold color palettes.
Plant tubers in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny location with rich, well-drained soil and give the plant plenty of space to develop. Regular cutting will encourage more blooms, and the plant will keep producing right through to fall.
If you want size, impact, and that classic show dahlia look, Dahlia ‘Great Hercules’ more than lives up to its name.
