Description
Dahlia ‘Islander’ is all about size and presence. The blooms regularly reach dinnerplate scale, often 8 to 10 inches across, with broad, softly curved petals that give the flower a full, open look without feeling stiff. The color sits in that classic soft pink range, but with more depth than a standard pastel. Petals open in a warm, shell pink and can deepen slightly toward the center, sometimes picking up a gentle blush or creamy undertone depending on the light. It’s a clean, elegant color that doesn’t compete, it just fills space beautifully. Plants grow tall, usually around 40 to 48 inches, and produce sturdy stems that carry the large blooms well when supported. Because of the flower size, staking early is important to keep everything upright through the season. Like most dahlias, it blooms steadily from midsummer right through to the first frost.
In the garden, ‘Islander’ works best when you give it room. It’s ideal for the back of borders or as a focal plant where the size of the blooms can really be appreciated. It pairs easily with whites, soft apricots, and deeper pinks, and it also blends well into more romantic, pastel plantings. For cutting, this is a classic choice. The large blooms make an impact in arrangements, and the soft pink tone works across a wide range of styles, from loose garden bouquets to more structured designs.
Plant tubers in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil and allow enough space for the plant to develop. With regular cutting, it will keep producing large blooms well into fall. In colder parts of the United States, lift tubers after frost and store them dry over winter.
If you’re looking for a dahlia that delivers that full, classic dinnerplate look in a soft, easy color, Dahlia ‘Islander’ is one that consistently performs.
