Description

Dahlia ‘Ludwig Helfert’ brings a different kind of energy into the garden. The blooms are bright, warm orange, but it’s the shape that really sets it apart. As a semi-cactus dahlia, the petals are narrower and slightly pointed, with a gentle twist that gives the flower movement. They are not as tightly spiked as full cactus types, but they have far more texture than a classic decorative dahlia. The result is a bloom that feels lively rather than heavy. The color is clean and saturated. A strong orange that holds well in sun, without fading into dull tones. It’s one of those shades that stands out easily but still blends well into late summer planting schemes. Flowers are usually around five to six inches across and sit on sturdy stems that hold them well above the foliage. Plants grow to about 36 to 44 inches tall and produce a steady run of blooms from midsummer right through to the first frost when cut regularly. In the garden, ‘Ludwig Helfert’ works well when you want both color and structure. It pairs naturally with deeper reds, warm yellows, and even softer apricot tones. The semi-cactus form also helps break up rounder flowers, adding contrast without overpowering the planting.  For cutting, this is a very usable variety. The stems are long and straight, and the bloom shape adds a bit of edge to arrangements. It brings texture as well as color, which makes it useful in both bold and more natural bouquets. Plant tubers in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil and give plants enough space to develop. Staking early is recommended to keep stems upright as the plant grows. In colder parts of the United States, lift tubers after frost and store them dry over winter. If you’re looking for a dahlia that combines strong color with a more dynamic flower shape, Dahlia ‘Ludwig Helfert’ is a dependable and distinctive choice.

          - Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
