Description

Dahlia ‘Penhill Dark Monarch’ is one of the largest and most dramatic dahlias you can grow, with blooms that regularly reach 10 to 12 inches across. When it’s in full flower, it doesn’t sit quietly in the background. It becomes the focus. The blooms are loose and ruffled rather than tightly structured, with broad petals that twist and curl slightly at the tips. That gives the flower a softer, almost windswept look, even at full size. The color is where it really stands apart. Smoky plum, dusty raspberry, soft apricot, and muted lilac tones all blend together across the petals. Some blooms lean darker and moodier, others show more warmth. No two look exactly the same. This is an informal decorative, dinnerplate-type dahlia, known for both its size and its relaxed, layered form. Plants grow tall, usually around 40 to 48 inches, and produce long, sturdy stems that are well suited for cutting, though staking early is important with flowers of this scale. In the garden, ‘Penhill Dark Monarch’ works best when you give it space. It has the presence to stand on its own, but it also blends beautifully with softer palettes. It pairs well with blush pinks, creams, and muted apricots, and can also anchor deeper tones like burgundy or plum. The slightly ruffled petals keep it from feeling too formal, even though the blooms are huge. For cutting, this is one of those varieties that can carry an arrangement on its own. The stems are long, the blooms are full, and the color variation adds depth without needing much else. It’s especially valued for more natural, garden-style bouquets. Plant tubers in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil and give plants enough room to develop. Regular cutting encourages more blooms, and the plant will continue producing from midsummer through fall. In colder parts of the United States, lift tubers after frost and store them dry over winter. If you’re looking for a dahlia with serious size but a softer, more artistic look, Dahlia ‘Penhill Dark Monarch’ delivers both, with blooms that feel as if they’ve been painted rather than grown.

          Planting information

          - Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.

          - Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.

          - Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.

          - Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
