Description
Sanguisorba Lilac Squirrel is one of those plants that makes people stop and ask what it is. From July to September, soft lilac pink flower spikes hang down from upright stems like little bottlebrushes, swaying with every breath of wind. The effect is light, airy and just a bit playful, which is exactly why it looks so good in naturalistic borders and prairie style plantings. It forms a tidy clump of grey green, finely cut leaves and grows to around 40 inches tall, so it sits nicely in the middle of a border. Plant it in full sun with moist but well drained soil and it will reward you with weeks of color. Bees and butterflies love the flowers, which makes it a lovely choice for a wildlife friendly garden. Combine it with ornamental grasses, Echinacea or late summer Salvia for a relaxed look that carries on well into fall. Cut the stems back to ground level in late winter and it comes back stronger every year.
Planting information
- Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.
- Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.
- Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.
- Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
