Description
Tulip Caramel is one of those varieties that makes you stop and look twice. The flowers are fully double with a rich, layered form that really does remind you of a small peony. Petals open in warm tones of copper, caramel, and burnished orange, brushed here and there with yellow and soft rose, so the color shifts through the day as the light moves across the blooms. Several growers also note a light fragrance, so a planting by a path or near a patio will reward you every time you walk past.
Tulip Caramel belongs to the double tulip class and flowers in mid to late spring, right when the tulip season is at its best. Stems reach around fourteen to sixteen inches, strong enough to hold the heavy heads and short enough that they stand up well in windy weather. In the border this tulip brings real depth, especially when you mix it with dark varieties such as Queen of Night or with pale apricot and soft pink for an old world, almost vintage look. Several US bulb specialists recommend it as an excellent cut flower and it lasts well in the vase, opening wide and showing every layer of petal over several days.
Tulip Caramel is planted in fall in any region with a true winter chill. Choose a spot in full sun with well drained soil, tuck the bulbs in at the usual tulip depth, and plant in generous groups so the color can really read from a distance. In colder zones it will flower toward the end of spring; in milder coastal climates it can be slightly earlier, but always in that sweet spot when the garden is waking up and you are ready for warm tones after a long winter. With its unusual brown orange coloring, reliable habit, and strong stems, Caramel tulip bulbs are a good choice for anyone who wants a tulip that looks different from the standard reds and yellows yet still earns its place in the garden every year.
