Description

Tulip Sweet Paradise is the kind of tulip that stops people in their tracks. Each bloom opens creamy white, with a bold strawberry red flame that runs up the petal from base to tip, then finishes in a finely fringed edge that looks almost like lace. In the garden or in a vase, it has that classic red and white candy stripe look but with the extra texture that only a fringed tulip can give. Fringed tulips are known for their serrated petal edges and elegant flower form, and they usually flower in the second half of spring on strong stems around sixteen to twenty inches tall.

This variety fits beautifully into American gardens from colder northern states to many parts of the South. Fringed tulips in general are hardy in about zones three through eight and prefer full sun with well draining soil. In cool and temperate regions you can plant Tulip Sweet Paradise in fall, let winter do the chilling, and enjoy flowers from late April into May. In warmer areas where winters are mild, tulip bulbs need an artificial cold spell in the refrigerator for about twelve to sixteen weeks before planting, so they can build the flower inside the bulb properly.

Sweet Paradise is a dream for container displays and front of border planting. The neat upright habit works well in rows along a path, tucked among perennials, or massed in pots by the front door. The bright red upper petals stand out clearly from a distance, while the soft creamy base blends nicely with spring blossom and early perennials. As a cut flower, fringed tulips have good stem length and a long vase life, which makes Sweet Paradise a very useful variety for home grown bouquets.

Planting tips for USA gardeners:
  • Plant the bulbs in fall once night temperatures stay near fifty degrees Fahrenheit or below and soil feels cool to the touch.
  • Choose a spot with at least six hours of sun and soil that drains freely. Raised beds or mixed borders with plenty of compost are ideal.
  • Set bulbs about six to eight inches deep and four to six inches apart, pointy end up. Group them quite closely for that solid block of color you see in Dutch fields.
  • In warm winter regions such as much of the South and coastal areas, prechill the bulbs in a breathable bag in the refrigerator for roughly twelve to sixteen weeks before planting, keeping them away from ripening fruit.
If you love strong color, interesting flower forms, and reliable spring performance, Tulip Sweet Paradise is an easy choice. Plant a generous group of bulbs this fall and you will have a red and white display in late spring that looks as if it came straight from a Dutch show garden, right in your own yard.
