Description

Dahlia Waltzing Mathilda is one of those varieties that feels alive in the garden. It doesn’t sit still visually. Everything about it, the color, the open form, even the foliage, gives it movement. This is a single-flowered dahlia, and that’s key to understanding it. Each bloom has a single row of softly curved petals surrounding a fully open center. That central disc is golden and exposed, constantly drawing in bees and pollinators throughout the season. It’s not built for fullness. It’s built for lightness and activity. The color is where this variety really earns its name. Think late summer sunset tones. The petals shift between peach, coral, apricot, and warm pink, often with deeper rosy edges or a soft red blush. Some blooms lean more orange, others more pink, and many show a gradient within the same flower. What makes it even more striking is the foliage. The leaves and stems are a deep purple to bronze tone, creating a strong contrast against the warm flowers. That dark backdrop makes the blooms feel brighter and more luminous, especially in late afternoon light. Flowers are typically around 3 to 4 inches across, produced in large numbers rather than a few oversized blooms. Plants grow to roughly 2.5 to 3 feet tall, forming a bushy, well-shaped clump that fits easily into borders or containers. From mid-summer through the first frost, Waltzing Mathilda flowers continuously. Because it’s a single type, it puts its energy into producing more blooms rather than bigger ones, so the plant always looks active and full of life. In the garden, this is not a formal dahlia. It leans natural, almost wild in character. It works beautifully in mixed borders, prairie-style plantings, or anywhere you want movement and pollinator activity rather than dense, structured flowers. It also mixes exceptionally well with grasses and perennials, where the open blooms can weave through other plants. It’s also surprisingly useful for cutting, especially for looser, more natural arrangements. The stems are strong enough, and the color blends easily with both warm and muted palettes.  Like all dahlias, it prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Plant the tubers after the last frost, and it will establish quickly and begin flowering within weeks. What makes Waltzing Mathilda stand out is its personality. It’s not perfect or uniform, and that’s exactly the point. The shifting colors, dark foliage, and open, dancing blooms give it a relaxed, effortless feel that keeps the garden looking alive from summer into fall.

          - Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.

          - Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.

          - Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.

          - Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
