Dahlia Aiyana

Dahlia ‘Aiyana’ is a showy, warm colored dahlia with layered, fringed petals in red, coral, rose, and soft orange tones. The flowers have a bright, almost painted look, with darker red tips and a glowing center that keeps the color from feeling flat. This is a dahlia for gardeners who want something bold, but still beautiful up close. Dahlia ‘Aiyana’ is usually listed as a fimbriata dahlia, which means the petals have a split, feathered, or slightly serrated look. That texture gives the blooms extra movement in the garden and makes them stand out from rounder decorative dahlias. Flower size is generally around 4 to 6 inches across, with plants reaching about 40 inches tall, depending on growing conditions. It blooms from midsummer into fall and keeps going until frost if cut or deadheaded regularly. The color is the real reason to grow it. Some describe Dahlia ‘Aiyana’ as orange with dark red tips, others as red, salmon pink, or coral red, which makes sense when you look at the bloom. It changes with the light and stage of opening. For cutting, Dahlia ‘Aiyana’ is a good choice. The stems are strong enough for arrangements, and the textured blooms add shape and color without needing much help from filler flowers. Cut stems when the flowers are mostly open, since dahlias do not continue opening much after cutting. Plant Dahlia ‘Aiyana’ tubers in spring after all danger of frost has passed. Choose full sun and fertile, well drained soil. Space plants about 18 to 24 inches apart and water once growth is active. In most of the USA, dahlias are not winter hardy, so the tubers should be lifted and stored after frost in colder zones.
