Description
Dahlia ‘Orange Hype’ is one of those varieties that doesn’t look real at first glance. The color combination is unusual enough to stop you, and once you see it in person, it’s hard to forget. The outer petals open in a soft peachy orange with a deeper reddish base, forming a warm, glowing backdrop. Just inside that, a ring of narrow, slightly twisted inner petals creates a frilled collar in shades of orange, pink, and even hints of lavender. At the center sits a bright golden disc that pulls everything together. That layered structure places it firmly in the collarette dahlia group, but this one feels far more expressive than most. The inner “twizzled” petals give it movement and a slightly wild look, rather than a neat, controlled form. The blooms are typically around four to six inches across, and they appear in large numbers on tall, well-branched plants. This is not a compact variety. It can easily reach five feet or more in height under good conditions, with flowers held on dark, almost chocolate-colored stems that add even more contrast. In the garden, ‘Orange Hype’ brings color in a way that feels layered rather than loud. It works well with warm palettes, oranges, corals, and reds, but also stands out against softer tones where the unusual color mix becomes more noticeable. The open center also makes it attractive to pollinators, adding movement to the planting. For cutting, this is a standout variety for anyone who wants something less predictable. The stems are long, the blooms hold well, and the color combination adds depth and interest to arrangements without needing much else. It’s the kind of flower that makes people look twice. Plant tubers in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil and give plants enough space to grow, as this variety has real height and presence. Staking early is recommended to support the tall stems. In colder parts of the United States, lift tubers after frost and store them dry over winter. If you’re looking for something different, not just another orange dahlia, Dahlia ‘Orange Hype’ brings color, structure, and just enough unpredictability to keep things interesting all season.
