Description

Dahlia Twyning’s Smartie is all about contrast, variation, and movement. It doesn’t try to be full or perfectly shaped. Instead, it leans into that open, natural look that feels much closer to wildflowers than traditional garden dahlias. This variety produces classic single blooms, meaning just one outer ring of petals surrounding a visible central disc. That open center is packed with pollen and nectar, which is why it’s constantly covered in bees and pollinators through the season. single-flowered dahlias have this simple structure by definition, and it’s exactly what makes them so valuable in wildlife-friendly gardens. The flowers themselves are where things get interesting. There is no fixed pattern. Some blooms are mostly white, others lean deep pink to red-purple, and many show a mix of both, often streaked or striped across the petals. On one plant, you can have completely different looking flowers at the same time, which gives it that unpredictable, almost playful character. Each bloom is typically around 2.5 to 3 inches across, smaller than fully double types, but produced in large numbers. Plants grow to about 2.5 to 3 feet tall with a bushy, upright habit, making it easy to place in borders, containers, or mixed plantings. From mid-summer through the first frost, Twyning’s Smartie flowers continuously. Because it is a single type, it puts its energy into quantity rather than size, so you get a steady, almost nonstop display. It always looks active, with fresh blooms opening daily. In the garden, this variety brings a lighter, more relaxed feel. It works especially well in cottage-style plantings, wildlife gardens, or anywhere you want movement and pollinator activity rather than dense blocks of color. The open blooms also mix beautifully with grasses and perennials, softening more structured plantings. Like all dahlias, it prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Plant the tubers after the last frost, and it will establish quickly and start flowering within weeks. It’s easy to grow, forgiving, and especially rewarding if you enjoy a more natural-looking garden. What makes Twyning’s Smartie stand out is its unpredictability. No two blooms are exactly the same, and even on the same plant the colors shift and change. If you’re looking for something that feels lively, pollinator-friendly, and a little less formal than traditional dahlias, this is exactly that kind of plant.

          Planting information

          - Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.

          - Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.

          - Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.

          - Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
