Dahlia Zahra

Dahlia Zahra is a refined, ivory-toned anemone dahlia with a very distinctive center. Instead of a flat open disc or a full double bloom, it forms a dense, raised cushion of tubular florets in soft cream to buttery yellow, surrounded by a clean outer ring of white petals. That central “pincushion” is what gives anemone dahlias their depth and texture, almost like a small, airy peony set inside a simpler flower. The blooms are typically around 4.5 to 5 inches across, large enough to stand out but still elegant. The contrast between the crisp white outer petals and the softly glowing center gives the flower a very clean, luminous look in the garden. It’s not stark white. It has warmth, especially as the center develops. Plants grow to about 3 feet tall, forming a tidy, upright clump that produces strong stems and a steady supply of blooms from mid-summer through the first frost. In the garden, Zahra brings a lighter, more structured feel than fully double dahlias. The defined center adds texture, while the white outer petals keep it clean and easy to place. It works especially well in mixed borders, soft color palettes, or alongside grasses and perennials where that layered center can really stand out. It’s also a strong cut flower. The stems are straight and reliable, and the bloom shape adds contrast to arrangements, especially when paired with fuller dahlias or looser, single types. Like all dahlias, it thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Plant the tubers in spring after the last frost, and it will establish quickly and begin flowering within weeks. What makes Zahra worth growing is its structure. The combination of a clean outer form and that soft, textured center gives it a very balanced, almost architectural look.
